{"id":167,"date":"2017-11-29T17:24:11","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T17:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cgrf.ca\/?page_id=167"},"modified":"2022-04-26T20:07:44","modified_gmt":"2022-04-26T20:07:44","slug":"lowac-finding-common-ground-through-creativity","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.cgrf.ca\/index.php\/community-partners\/lowac-finding-common-ground-through-creativity\/","title":{"rendered":"LOWAC &#8211; Finding Common Ground Through Creativity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lake of the Woods Arts Community was the CGRF&#8217;s first community partner to undertake community research through this project.\u00a0 The project was a cooperative participatory art venture,\u00a0facilitated by CGRF graduate student <a href=\"http:\/\/cgrf.ca\/index.php\/projects\/melanie-zurba\/\">Melanie Zurba<\/a>.\u00a0 It brought together Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from the Kenora area in 2010.<a href=\"http:\/\/cgrf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC00009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-175 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cgrf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC00009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Participants were asked to create works that answered the question \u201c<em>What does the land mean to you?<\/em>\u201d \u00a0The project was a forum for cross-cultural collaboration, as well as an opportunity to create a conversation about the values and meanings people hold in relation to the land, water and place that they share.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-176 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cgrf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0940-225x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cgrf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0940-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.cgrf.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_0940.jpeg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Two lasting pieces of art were created through this project: a large glass mosaic based on the creation story of Turtle Island, and a sculpture consisting of numerous test tubes filled with natural and created precious objects that reflected artists\u2019 connections to and values associated with the land.
